Our Sewage Cleanup Process
Sewage cleanup is regulated and sequenced for a reason. The steps and the order matter. Our technicians follow a process that protects your household and addresses the full scope of the contamination.
The cleanup process we follow includes:
- Protective setup before any entry into the contaminated area – Our technicians suit up before entering the affected space. Personal protective equipment is standard for any sewage event regardless of visible contamination size. We also restrict access to the area for any household members until cleanup is complete.
- Extraction of standing sewage and contaminated water – We extract standing sewage using truck-mounted or portable extraction equipment. This step removes the primary contamination from the space before surface treatment begins.
- Removal of contaminated porous materials – Flooring, drywall, insulation, and other porous materials that absorbed sewage are removed. These materials cannot be disinfected. Attempting to clean rather than remove them leaves pathogens in the structure.
- Disinfection of structural surfaces – After contaminated materials are removed, remaining structural surfaces are treated with EPA-registered disinfectants appropriate for sewage contamination. This includes subfloor framing, concrete, and any hard surface that contacted sewage.
- Structural drying and moisture monitoring – We dry the affected structural elements to normal moisture levels to prevent secondary mold growth. Moisture levels are monitored until they reach acceptable readings before the area is closed up.
- Deodorization – Sewage odor in structural materials doesn't respond to surface deodorizers. We treat the source materials and run air scrubbing equipment to address airborne odor during and after the remediation process.
After cleanup and drying are complete, we're available to handle repairs and material replacement for the areas where flooring, drywall, and other materials were removed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sewage Cleanup
The following answers address the questions homeowners ask most often when dealing with a sewage event.
Is Sewage Water Dangerous to Touch?
Yes. Sewage is classified as black water contamination and contains bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. Avoid contact with the sewage and any surfaces or materials that contacted it. Keep children and pets out of the affected area until our team has completed cleanup and disinfection.
Can I Clean Up a Sewage Backup Myself?
Small toilet overflow events limited to a sealed tile floor can sometimes be addressed with proper protective equipment and disinfection. A sewage backup that reaches porous materials, including drywall, carpeting, or wood flooring, requires professional remediation. The contamination in those materials cannot be fully addressed without removal and proper disposal.
How Long Does Sewage Cleanup Take?
A contained event in a basement or bathroom typically takes one to two days for cleanup and initial drying. Full structural drying to acceptable moisture levels can take additional days, depending on the materials affected. We give you a realistic timeline after we assess the extent of the contamination.
Do You Also Fix the Sewer Line That Caused the Backup?
Yes. Our plumbing team handles sewer line repair alongside the restoration work. A video inspection identifies the cause, and we can address blockages with hydro jetting or repair the line through trenchless methods where appropriate.
