Upgrading Your Switches & Outlets

Worn, outdated, or improperly installed switches and outlets aren’t just and inconvenience, they can also pose serious fire and shock risks. Older outlets may not support today’s electrical loads, while cracked plates or loose wiring increase the risk of shorts or overheating. The right upgrades can:

  • Improve your home’s safety
  • Enhance energy efficiency
  • Accommodate new devices or appliances
  • Add functionality with USB or smart switches
  • Bring your home up to modern code

If you notice flickering lights, warm outlets, or plugs that won’t stay secure, it’s time to call our professionals.

GFCI vs. AFCI: What’s the Difference?

Electrical code requirements have evolved significantly over the years, and two common upgrades involve GFCI and AFCI outlets. Both help protect your home, but in different ways.

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)

GFCI outlets are designed for areas with moisture, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and garages. They shut off electrical flow when they detect an imbalance, helping to prevent electric shock. You’ve likely seen them with built-in “test” and “reset” buttons.

Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI)

AFCI outlets protect against electrical fires caused by arc faults, small sparks from loose or damaged wiring. These are especially important in bedrooms and living areas, where most home fires begin.

Not sure which type you need? Our electricians can walk you through code requirements and the best options for your property.

Signs It’s Time to Replace a Switch or Outlet

Some issues are obvious, others develop quietly behind the wall.

Here are common signs you need switch or outlet service:

  • Loose plugs. Devices fall out or feel unsteady.
  • Cracked or damaged faceplates. This can expose live wires.
  • Discoloration or burning smells. Indicates heat buildup or arcing.
  • Buzzing sounds or sparking. A sign of internal damage or poor connections.
  • Unresponsive switches. If a switch no longer controls its fixture, it could be worn or faulty.

If you notice any of the above, don’t wait, our licensed team provides same-day service throughout Denver, Aurora, Centennial, Boulder, Greeley, and Eaton.
