Portable vs. Standby Generators
If you’re looking to install a generator, choosing the right type is an important first step. There are two primary types of generators that you might use to power your home or business: standby generators and portable generators. Each has its own strengths and benefits, along with drawbacks and other considerations to work around. It’s essential to understand these key differences when making your decision.
Portable Generators
Portable generators are compact units that, as their name implies, can be moved from location to location as needed. They are ideal for temporary power during short-term outages or for outdoor events, as they can be easily moved (though they can often be extremely heavy and hard for a single person to lift and move). They are cost-effective and easy to store. However, they require manual setup every time there is a power outage, and they need to be frequently refueled. Likewise, they might not suit homes or businesses with larger energy demands, as they typically have a somewhat limited capacity and usually can’t power your home the way the grid typically does.
Standby Generators
Standby generators are permanently installed somewhere on your property and automatically activate as soon as a power outage occurs. They’re designed to supply power to your entire home or business, operating seamlessly without manual intervention. While they are a bigger investment upfront, their automatic nature and generally higher capacity make them more capable of meeting higher energy demands. This makes them a top choice for homeowners and businesses focused on disaster preparedness and those who want to be able to use more of their home’s appliances and high-power devices during an outage.

Safely Connecting a Generator to Your Property
If you power your home with a portable generator, then you’ll need to connect that generator to your property to power it during an outage. It’s extremely important to connect your generator properly, or you could be putting yourself, your home, and any workers servicing public electric infrastructure at risk.
To safely connect a portable generator to your home, you need a couple of things: a transfer switch, and a proper power connection outlet. For the power outlet, most portable generators will connect to your home using a specialized 220-volt power cord that will be either the three- or four-prong variety, usually a “twist locking” type for added safety and stability.
Next, you’ll need a transfer switch or a transfer panel, depending on your current electrical system setup. A transfer switch is an important component that prevents power from your generator from backfeeding into utility lines. This protects any workers who might be conducting service on these lines and, in turn, reduces strain on your generator. Flipping this switch temporarily disconnects your home from the public power grid, allowing you to safely fire up your generator and utilize that power without risk to public power lines.
Standby generators also require a transfer switch as well, but they can sometimes utilize an automatic switch that will shut off the connection to the public grid immediately when the backup generator turns on. This is the safer and faster way to get your power up and running during an outage without any manual setup time or effort.
At Allen Service, we handle every aspect of the generator connection process, including installing outlets and wiring infrastructure as well as transfer switches that make generator connection and operation a breeze.

What Size Generator Do I Need?
One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a generator is power output. A generator that doesn’t supply enough power won’t support your devices or the functions that you need your home to be able to provide during a grid outage. A generator that is too large will cost more and provide more capacity than you need. While a bit of extra headroom is always a good idea, going way overboard on capacity will burn far more fuel than you need and have a much bigger upfront cost than you’d like.
At Allen Service, we use a systematic approach to help you select the right generator for your home or business. This starts by assessing your power usage habits and learning more about what you might want to have access to during a blackout. It’s important to prioritize critical systems first, such as your lights, refrigerators, or any life-dependent medical equipment. From there, we also factor in any additional luxury features, such as your washer and dryer, any electric cooking appliances, and even an EV charger to see what your maximum usage might be. While these luxury options may not be necessary, they might be something you might want if you’re looking to go with a standby generator option.
Our licensed technicians will guide you through this process and recommend a generator tailored to your specific requirements.
