Air conditioning technology is always improving. That means the newer your system, the better it will tend to perform, and the longer it is likely to last. Because air conditioning is one of the most expensive aspects of maintaining a comfortable home, cost efficiency is at a premium when it comes to choosing an AC unit.
A lot of today’s homeowners acquired their homes before the days when AC in the home became commonplace. Today, most of us take central AC as a given in any home, and not a luxury. Even though air conditioning has become a standard, many people are still mystified about how these systems work, how efficient they should be, and how long they can be expected to last.
AVERAGE AC LIFESPANS
While AC technology is changing, and ACs can be expected to last longer and longer as the technology progresses, the normal lifespan of most air conditioners is going to be between 10 and 20 years- possibly averaging out around 15 years of regular use.
For those of us living in climates that get especially hot in the summertime, you can expect that this average will fall to about 12 years, typically. Likewise, if the summers in your area are mild, you can expect your AC to last on average around 17 to 20 years.
EFFICIENCY VS LIFESPAN
Now, you may be thinking, ‘Great! My AC is just ten years old- I should be able to get another ten out of it.’ That may be the case- however, just because your AC has lots of life left in it doesn’t mean that you couldn’t lower your electricity bills by installing a new energy efficient AC system.
While ACs tend to last between 15 and 20 years, they become obsolete about every five years. That means you might save more money by replacing your AC than you would by running out it’s lifespan. Of course, that means you’ll need to choose the correct size and type for your home and climate.
