Fort Collins Plumbing Tip #4

Filed under: Plumber Tip, Plumbing Repair, Water Heater Service

You use it every day, and when it fails, your whole family gets miserable: your hot water heater. There are a few things you can do to ensure that your family has safe, efficient hot water, all the time. First, check around the heater to make sure nothing has been stored too close to it, especially flammable liquids like cleaning products, paint thinners and gasoline. Make sure there’s a three-foot safety circle around your hot water heater on all sides. Next, look at the flame under the heater. It should be blue, not yellow. If it’s yellow, call in a Allen Service Plumbing expert to clean out the jets. Refer to your owner’s manual for instructions on how to check inside the burner chamber for signs of rust.

Check the top of the heater where the pipes connect for any green discoloration, a sign of corrosion. Your owner’s manual should also show you how to drain a few gallons of water out of the tank to clear any sediment that has built up inside. Finally, make sure your heater’s thermostat is set no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Any hotter, and somebody could be burned – not to mention, the hotter the water, the higher your energy bills.

If you’re uncomfortable performing these basic hot water heater maintenance tasks, call in a Allen Service Plumbing expert to do it for you. We serve Fort Collins, Loveland, Laporte, Bellevue, Windsor, Timnath, Severance, Ault, Eaton, Johnstown, Milliken, Berthoud, and Wellington.
