Fort Collins Plumber Tip #3

Filed under: Plumber Tip, Plumbing Repair

You’d be amazed at how much water a toilet can waste. They’re greedy at their best, but if there’s a leak, it will really cost you. Make it part of your spring cleaning and maintenance routine to check your toilet’s overall health, and if there’s a problem you’re not comfortable fixing yourself, bring in an Allen Service Plumbing expert to your Fort Collins area home.

First, push and pull on the toilet to make sure it doesn’t move. Second, check the caulking around the base of the toilet. If it’s cracked or crumbling, scrape it off and re-caulk. Lift the lid and look inside the tank. Does anything look rusty or broken? It may be time to replace those old toilet parts. Next, add six drops of water to the tank, stir it around and leave it for half an hour. If the color appears in the bowl, your tank is leaking. Now flush the toilet. If you have to hold the handle down to get it to flush completely or jiggle the handle to get the toilet to stop running, it’s time to replace the parts inside the tank. Finally, feel the hoses and valves for any moisture, and look for wetness on the floor behind the toilet. There could be a leak you’ll have to repair.

An Allen Service Plumbing expert can help you with any necessary repairs to keep your toilet operating efficiently. We serve Fort Collins, Loveland, Laporte, Bellevue, Windsor, Timnath, Severance, Ault, Eaton, Johnstown, Milliken, Berthoud, and Wellington.
