Fort Collins Heating and Air Tips #1

Filed under: Air Conditioning, Energy Saving Tips, Fort Collins Air Conditioning, Heating

That nasty rotten-egg odor is unmistakable: the smell of natural gas. You might not know, though, that in its natural state, gas is odorless and tasteless. The gas company by law has to add a chemical to natural gas so that homeowners and plumbers can detect it in the air. Whether the gas company has failed to add enough of the odor-causing chemical to the gas or there’s a build-up of moisture or debris in your pipes, the result could be that the gas may actually not smell like anything. This can be dangerous: if there’s enough of it in the air in your Fort Collins home or business, it can explode when your plumber tries to relight a gas-supplied appliance after completing a repair.

You or your plumber could be injured, or there could be a major fire if the explosion is big enough. If any plumber is going to be working on the hot water heater or space heater – anything that runs off of natural gas – in your Fort Collins home, he should have a special tool called a combustible gas indicator. A combustible gas indicator is costly, so not everybody has one. Before you let a plumber into your Fort Collins home to work on your gas-supplied appliance, it’s important to know that they have the right tools to be able to work safely.
