Coping with sump pump failure
Filed under: Coping with sump pump failure, Flooded Basements, Plumbing Repair, Sump Pumps
You’ve tried to protect your Fort Collins home from basement flooding with a sump pump, but sump pumps do age and may eventually stop working. Unfortunately, you’re most likely to find out your pump has failed when you find a lake in your basement. Stay calm. Start by calling Allen Service Plumbing because we can provide immediate live service to resolve this emergency fast. We’re located right here in Fort Collins, so we can respond quickly. In the meantime, get ready to bail. It’s dangerous to try to bail several feet of water, but with two feet or less, you can get it done.
Gather as many buckets, large bowls, pots and quart containers as possible. Bring at least one helper, but one person can manage this heavy job if need be. The helper should wait on the stairs. Use a small container (the kind ricotta cheese or Chinese soup comes in) to scoop water into a larger one. If you try to dip water directly into a bucket, it will be hard to fill the bucket completely. Pass the full bucket to the helper so she can carry the bucket as far from the house as possible to empty it. While she’s gone, get the next bucket ready for when the helper returns. Don’t try to get the last inch or so of water off the floor.
Check the basement frequently to see if it has flooded again. Once the sump pump is repaired or replaced, you can use rags to blot up the last of the water or let it seep away. Wash your hands and legs thoroughly afterward.
