About heat pumps

Filed under: Fort Collins Heating, Heating

A heat pump does a neat trick: it can serve as either a heating or cooling system for your Fort Collins home. They have an indoor unit and an outdoor unit, with air and refrigerant circulating between them. A simple reversal valve allows you to switch between heating and cooling mode, as the weather requires. Some heat pumps, called geothermal heat pumps, pick up heat from deep inside the ground and circulate it through the system; others pull in outdoor air. Either way, the outdoor unit can serve either as the condenser to cool the indoors, or as the evaporator to warm the indoors. Simultaneously, the indoor unit is serving the opposite function. Heat pumps tend to be somewhat less efficient than central air conditioning or traditional heating through a furnace, but in some cases, they work better. You can select models that have the Energy Star rating. Homeowners who install Energy Star rated heat pumps qualify for a 30 percent tax credit. If you’re wondering whether switching to a heat pump would serve your Fort Collins home better than your current system, ask a knowledgeable Allen Service  technician, who can evaluate your home, discuss your options with you, and install and service your new heat pump.
